In casi come questo, come già visto spesse volte durante il 2023 e 2024, l’editorial board si dimette in massa. E’ successo ancora, come riporta Retraction Watch, nel caso del Mathematical logic quarterly, pubblicazione edita da Wiley. Nella lettera aperta di dimissioni pubblicata da RW si legge una critica piuttosto dura all’ingerenza dell’editore che, anche se profit-oriented, dovrebbe cercare di offrire i servizi veramente richiesti dalla comunità scientifica:

We believe that there is a tension between the interests of commercial and profit-oriented
publishers and the main purposes of academic publishing; a cooperation of the academic community
with a commercial, profit-oriented publisher is only fruitful if the publisher respects the expectations and demands of the academic community

We do not believe that Wiley is currently providing an environment that allows the editors to do their editorial work according to the standards of the academic community and free from the negative influence of commercial and profit-oriented interests,

Mathematical logic quarterly è il quattordicesimo journal di Wiley, dal 2020, che mette in atto una dimissione in massa. Come in molti altri casi la scelta del board non è stata di sciogliersi, ma di avviare una nuova iniziativa diamond open access: Zeitschrift fur Mathematische Logik und Grundlagen der Mathematik

Nella lettera che il 7 aprile annuncia la nascita del nuovo journal troviamo scritto:

ZML is an electronic Diamond Open Access research journal: the journal is available openly
and free of charge to authors and readers anywhere in the world, independently of their institutional
affiliations. In the spirit of true open access, all papers are published under the Creative Commons
license CC-BY 4.0 International. ZML uses the submission system EditFlow that was designed by
mathematicians for mathematicians.

Il motivo per le dimissioni è, anche questa volta e come segnalato in altri casi analoghi, il prevalere degli interessi commerciali e for-profit rispetto a quelli scientifici che hanno influito negativamente sui processi editoriali. Qualcosa che abbiamo ormai visto troppe volte negli ultimi anni.

Sempre nella lettera aperta, l’editorial board spiega che iniziative di diamond open access avviate per tutta la comunità scientifica hanno costi importanti in termini di infrastruttura e di lavoro volontario. E’ quindi importante che in questa come in altre iniziative diamond ci sia un impegno consistente da parte delle istituzioni, delle società scientifiche e degli enti finanziatori.

Alla luce di questo ulteriore atto di ribellione nei confronti di un editore oligopolista, diventa ugente una analisi seria di quanto stiamo pagando la conoscenza scientifica e se questa spesa sia davvero necessaria o se gli investimenti potrebbero più utilmente essere spostati su iniziative dove i publisher

provide the editorial team with an environment that efficiently assists them in their task and conforms to the specifications of the academic research community.
